Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione in Paris

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

Viva La France! I’ve moved on from London to the next city of my Europe trip this year: Paris, the city of love, the Eiffel Tower, baguettes, fashion and most importantly, expensive cars!

Upcoming posts of Paris will include a royal Koenigsegg in a remarkable colour, treasures underneath the busy Parisien streets and the Tour de France, where Australian cyclist Cadel Evans took the title home this year.

I’ll kick it off with the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, an unusual sports car of which the production was limited to only 500 units, which were all built between 2007-2009. There’s also a convertible, the 8C Spider, also limited to 500 units. The name refers to the eight cylinder (Cilindro in Italian) engine (8C) and Alfa Romeo’s racing pedigree (Competizione, Italian for ‘Competition’).

Like the Bugatti Veyron, the 8C Competizione is only left-hand drive, which sadly means that you can’t register this car in Australia, though I understand there are at least two 8C Spiders in the country.

Specifications

  • Top Speed 292 km/h (181 mph)
  • 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) 4.2 seconds
  • 1/4 mile 12.4 seconds @ 187.3 km/h (116.4 mph)
  • Type V8
  • Displacement 4.7 L (4691 cc) (286.8 cu in)
  • Power 331 kW (450 PS; 444 hp) @ 7000 rpm
  • Torque 480 N·m (350 lb·ft) @ 4750 rpm

The 8C Competizione below was spotted at the swanky Ritz Hotel at the Place Vendôme in Paris, the hotel where Diana, Princess of Wales and Al-Fayed’s son Dodi Al-Fayed, and their chauffeur Henri Paul, dined in the Imperial Suite  before their fatal car accident in 1997.

As it is one of the most prestigious and luxurious hotels in the world you’ll often find exotic cars parked at the valet (it was accompanied by a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and a Rolls-Royce Ghost while I was there) as well as in the underground car parking underneath Place Vendôme, but more on that later…
